Trips

Warning! Rocks on Top trip reports before February 2011 are probably dead links.

Wildcat and Carter Ranges - White Mountains, New Hampshire - 24-25 February 2007

Saturday 24 February 2007
Nineteen Mile Brook Trailhead - Nineteen Mile Brook Trail - Carter Notch Hut U - Nineteen Mile Brook Trail - Wildcat Ridge Trail - Wildcat A Mtn. U - Wildcat Ridge Trail - Nineteen Mile Brook Trail - Carter Notch Hut

Sunday 25 February 2007
Carter Notch Hut - Nineteen Mile Brook Trail - Carter-Moriah Trail - Carter Dome - Carter-Moriah Trail - Mt. Hight - Carter-Moriah Trail - Zeta Pass - Carter-Moriah Trail - South Carter Mountain U - Carter-Moriah Trail - trail confusion - Carter Dome Trail - Nineteen Mile Brook Trail - Nineteen Mile Brook Trailhead

The snow was mostly packed down (less so on the Southern approach to Hight than elsewhere), but it was soft in places. I switched back and forth between snowshoes and crampons several times. The climb up Wildcat A was much tougher than I remembered it from April of '05, because the snow was not as hard.

On Saturday there were high stratus clouds, but on Sunday it was clear with 120 mile visibility. It wasn't cold, except on top of Hight, where the winds were fierce.

Sandwich Range - White Mountains, New Hampshire - 5-6 May 2007

Sunday 6 May 2007
Ferncroft Trailhead - Dicey's Mill Trail - Blueberry Ledge Cutoff - Blueberry Ledge Trail - Rollins Trail - Mt. Whiteface U - Rollins Trail - Blueberry Ledge Trail - Ferncroft Trailhead

This was two day hikes. I car camped off the Kanc in between.

The conditions were very different the two days. On Saturday there were patches of snow starting at the trailhead. It soon covered the trail, and it was soft and slippery. I was on snowshoes most of the way. Descending N. Tripyramid was very difficult. Besides that it was a great day to hike, though. It was fairly warm, with cumulus clouds. I really liked Middle Tripyramid's peak.

On Sunday there was no snow until I passed the BL Cutoff / BL Trail intersection. After that the snow was fairly hard; I barebooted the whole day. My original plan was to loop over Passaconaway. I got a late start though (for several reasons) so I first decided to just do Passaconaway. Then I changed my mind and decided to do both after all (which is why I went from Dicey's Mill to the BL Cutoff). When I got to Whiteface, though, I decided to just do Whiteface. It was even warmer on Sunday than Saturday, again with cumulus clouds in the sky.

Holyoke Range - Berkshire Mountains, Massachusetts - 24 June 2007

Sunday 24 June 2007
Massachusetts Turnpike - Metacomet-Monadnock Trail - U.S. Rte. 202 - Metacomet-Monadnock Trail - Mass. Rte. 141 - Metacomet-Monadnock Trail - Mt. Tom - Metacomet-Monadnock Trail - Goat Peak - Metacomet-Monadnock Trail - Mt. Nonotuck - Metacomet-Monadnock Trail - U.S. Rte. 5

This was my first long non-solo hike in years. It turned out real well. I went with people I'd met online on the Rocks on Top fora.

The hike was sixteen miles along a ridge, with many cliffs and views on the western side. There were six of us for the whole hike, and a seventh for the first section. The weather was good; it would have been too hot but there was a faily constant breeze.

Tuesday 3 July 2007
Lonesome Lake Hut - Fishin' Jimmy Trail - Cascade Brook Trail - Basin-Cascade Trail - The Basin

This was my third annual hiking trip with Laura. This time we were a little more adventurous and went to Lonesome Lake. It was a challenge for Laura to get up to the hut and back, but she did it. On Monday she circled the lake while I did the Cannon / North Kinsman loop.

For the third time, I summited both North Kinsman and Cannon in the same trip and had great views on the former and no views on the latter.

On the way up on Sunday I saw a mink (or maybe a fisher) on the Basin-Cascade Trail.

Middlefield/Durham Area, Connecticut - 22 July 2007

I91 Exit 20 - Mattabesett Trail - U.S. Rte. 66 - Mattabesett Trail - U.S. Rte. 68 - Mattabesett Trail - Conn. Rte. 17

This was another trip with my new friends from Rocks on Top.

This was another hike along a ridge, with many cliffs and views on the western side. There were nine of us this time. The first few sections overlooked the interstate, but on the last section the highway veered off and we were more in the wild.

Tuesday 7 August 2007
Mizpah Spring Hut - Webster Cliff Trail - Mt. Jackson - Webster Cliff Trail - Mt. Webster - Webster Cliff Trail - Crawford Notch (Rte. 302)

This was my big hike for the year. I'll do other hikes in the Whites, but since I'm saving up vacation days for a through hike of the Long Trail in '09 I won't be out for this long again until next year. It was a big success, though, as far as I was concerned. I felt good hiking the whole time, I met a lot of interesting people in the huts and on the trail, I had great views three of the four days, I reached the two-thirds point peakbagging, and I shot the moon playing hearts at Mizpah Hut.

Pemigewasset Wilderness - White Mountains, New Hampshire - 25-26 August 2007

Saturday 25 August 2007
Lincoln Woods Trailhead - Lincoln Woods Trail - Franconia Brook Trail - Lincoln Brook Trail - camp

Sunday 26 August 2007
camp - Lincoln Brook Trail - unofficial Owl's Head Trail - Owl's Head southern summit - unofficial Owl's Head Trail - Owl's Head northern summit U - unofficial Owl's Head Trail - Owl's Head southern summit - unofficial Owl's Head Trail - Lincoln Brook Trail - camp - Lincoln Brook Trail - Franconia Brook Trail - Lincoln Woods Trail - Lincoln Woods Trailhead

I took part in an backpacking expedition to Owl's Head with some people from Rocks on Top. It was a great success. Even though the trail up to Owl's Head is unofficial, it's well marked. A good part of it is a slide, though, which was particularly hairy on the descent.

When on top I went the extra .2 miles to the northern summit, which is supposed to be a little higher.

Franconia - White Mountains, New Hampshire - 6-7 October 2007

Liberty - Franconia Ridge Trail - Mt. Flume - Franconia Ridge Trail - Flume Slide Trail - Liberty Spring Trail - Whitehouse Trail - Whitehouse Trail - Pemi Trail - Flume Trailhead

This was a repeat the trip I attempted in June of 2006. This was a lot more successful. I travelled up to the ridge on Saturday, hiking between Little Haystack and Lafayette, and on Sunday went down the ridge from Lafayette all the way to Flume, descending on the Flume Slide Trail.

Sunday morning had some of the most incredible views I've ever seen in the mountains. The valleys were filled with cumulus clouds, and a big stratus cloud was pushed up against Garfield Ridge, spilling into the Pemi, engulfing Cannon, and shooting into the notch. These clouds were all blazing in the sun, because I was looking at their sunlit tops.

Sunday 26 August 2007
camp - Isolation Trail East - Davis Path - Boott Spur Trail - Boott Spur Link - Hermit Lake Shelter - Tuckerman Ravine Trail - Pinkham Notch

This was another backpacking expedition with some people from Rocks on Top. We arrived on the Isolation summit just after sunset below some great cloud formations. It was warm for October, and we only got a little rain. It was very windy on Sunday, though.

The Sleeping Giant - Connecticut - 28 October 2007

Sunday 28 October 2007
Conn. Rte. 17 - Mattabesett Trail - various road walks and bushwacks - Quinnipiac Trail - Kimberly Ave. trailhead

This was another trip with my friends from Rocks on Top.

The first part of this hike was a journey through southern Wallingford ducking in and out of woods. The second part was a trek across the Sleeping Giant in Hamden, travelling East to West from the Giant's feet to his head.

This was another hike with the folks from Rocks on Top.

There were a lot of nice streams and little waterfalls, and, at the end, a porcupine on the ground.

Laura and I spent a couple nights at Joe Dodge Lodge in Pinkham Notch around the turn of the new year, while I did some day hikes. I had intended to summit Cabot on Monday, but I got a late start and I was slowed down by breaking trail, and in the end did not have enough daylight.
