Trips

Warning! Rocks on Top trip reports before February 2011 are probably dead links.

The Hancocks/Tecumseh - White Mountains, New Hampshire - 16-17 February 2008

Saturday 16 February 2008
Kancamagus Highway - Hancock Notch Trail - Cedar Brook Trail - Hancock Loop Trail - Mt. Hancock - Hancock Loop Trail - South Hancock Mtn. - Hancock Loop Trail - Cedar Brook Trail - Hancock Notch Trail - Kancamagus Highway

Sunday 17 February 2008
Waterville Valley Ski Area - Mt. Tecumseh Trail - Mt. Tecumseh U - Mt. Tecumseh Trail - Waterville Valley Ski Area

This was two day trips with members of Rocks on Top. I crashed at Mad River's house in between.

Saturday's hike was cold but not very windy. The climb up Hancock was steep, but the really tough part of the hike was on the ridge between the peaks. Since we were on about five feet of snow there were a lot of very low branches, some of which had to be crawled under. I did the whole hike in snowshoes.

On Sunday the Mt. Tecumseh trail was packed down. I walked most of the way in crampons. Much of the trail parallels a ski run, and some of the skiers took a side trip down the trail.

For longer trip reports see Rocks on Top (Hancocks) and Rocks on Top (Tecumseh).

This was a real difficult hike, due to the terrible trail conditions. Not only was the snow slippery, but there were a lot of fir saplings bent over the trail. I got back to the car at 12:34 a.m. after almost 16 hours.

For a longer trip report see Rocks on Top.

This was a hike over very variable conditions. The trail was at turns bare, partially covered with snow, and covered with snow, and the snow varied itself in softness (and thus difficulty in traversing). I spent Sat. night at Galehead Hut with some friends from Rocks on Top.
